They are harder to take apart and the stuff electronics are made of is less valuable. And we’ve seen a wave of other activities to promote electronic recycling.” That said, more and more products are being designed in a way that is harder to recycle, says Kyle. For one, “the 25 states with laws already cover two-thirds of the population. Producer responsibility laws are not necessary to boost e-waste recycling, says Linnell. In addition, NCER, along with the state of Minnesota, recently developed a guide of best practices in selecting and contracting with a recycler.ĥ. Kyle says there are two voluntary certification programs that cities can use as guides when picking a recycler - e-Stewards and R2. There are a lot of “bad actors,” says ETBC’s Barbara Kyle, pointing to companies that dump electronics in landfills or just get in over their heads. There have been several instances in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, for example, where contracted recyclers simply walked away, leaving governments with electronics and no way to recycle them. Absent electronic waste drop-off centers, cities can also hold recycling events.Ĥ. In Washington, according to the Electronics TakeBack Coalition (ETBC), 92 percent of residents have a convenient collection site within 10 miles of their home thanks to the law. Several states, including Oregon and Washington, require that every city and county with over 10,000 people must have a collection site. Municipalities see high collection volumes when collection is convenient. This method is so far only in use in California, which was the first state to establish an e-waste recycling law in 2003.ģ. The fee, in turn, is deposited in a statewide recycling fund. The other approach is fee-based, in which consumers must pay retailers a fee at the time of purchase. Under this model, the manufacturer pays to collect and recycle the products under the law. The first, which is on the books in all but one of these states, is called a “producer responsibility” approach. The laws primarily fall under two models. The good news is that 25 states and the District of Columbia have electronic recycling laws in place. At the same time, the United Nations reported that the world’s electronic waste would grow by 33 percent, from almost 50 million tons to more than 65 million tons, between 20. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that in 2011 only one-quarter of all the electronic waste generated was recycled. So what happens to all those gadgets once we’re done with them? But trading in the old for the new is quickly becoming an almost yearly ritual for many: Rapid advances in technology mean that our cellphones, tablets and TVs are “obsolete” in 18 months. That “incredible quarter,” as Apple CEO Tim Cook called it, was due in large part to the debut of the iPhone 6, which prompted millions of people to swap out their old smartphone for a new one. Apple sold a record 74.5 million iPhones in last year’s fourth quarter.

8/19/2023 0 Comments Tidal vs spotify royaltiesa song’s percentage of the service’s total number of streams, which means Apple Music does not pay royalties on a per stream basis). It is not hard to see how the inaccuracies, which were not stated but may have been inferred from the letter and the article, could lead some artists to think that they’ll be getting a penny from Apple every time their music is streamed, or even that the company has increased its rates to pay artists a penny per stream, even though the letter specifically states that “royalties from streaming services are calculated on a stream share basis” (i.e. However, nuances were lost in some of the wording: The first sentence of the WSJ article reads: “Apple Music told artists it pays a penny per stream” - which does not specify who it pays a penny per stream - and while the main headline on the article reads, “Apple Music Reveals How Much It Pays When You Stream a Song,” a secondary headline reads, “Apple Music pays artists twice as much as Spotify per stream.” Spotify, which generates revenue both from subscriptions and its free ad-supported tier, says it pays ⅔ of every dollar of revenue to rights holders, with 75% to 80% of that going to labels, which translates to 50 to 53 cents on the dollar, depending on agreements between the service and different labels.” The WSJ article unpacks that paragraph more or less accurately, writing: “In the letter, Apple says it pays 52% of subscription revenue, or 52 cents of every dollar, to record labels. This includes label and publisher royalties.” (It does not provide details on how that average was reached.) This value varies by subscription plan and country but averaged $0.01 for Apple Music individual paid plans in 2020. While royalties from streaming services are calculated on a stream share basis, a play still has a value. The per-stream rate is addressed in a brief paragraph in the letter, which reads in full: “Our average per play rate is $0.01. (Reps for Apple Music and Spotify declined Variety‘s requests for comment.) More to the point, some of the statements in the letter were not fully conveyed in the initial reporting. Variety has obtained the letter from three different industry sources, and while it makes no direct reference to Spotify and no direct claim that Apple Music pays twice as much per stream, the Swedish company - and particularly a public report it issued last month attempting to clarify its royalty policies - is clearly the target of some of its more barbed statements. The letter, which was not sent to the media, was obtained by the Wall Street Journal, which published a report that was not inaccurate but, since it was the only reliable source of the news for media outlets, was often inaccurately re-reported - most frequently in multiple headlines stating that Apple Music pays twice as much per stream as Spotify. Early Friday, Apple Music sent a carefully worded letter to artists, music labels and publishers that briefly explained “how creators earn royalties” from the streaming service, which is the world’s second-largest, behind Spotify. 8/19/2023 0 Comments Pictures of big time rushSee more photos of the two boy bands in the gallery. The new Climate Change system is related to disasters in that it uses an increase in storms and floods as part of its major consequences for burning too much coal and oil to power your cities’ factories, forcing you to weigh the short-term benefit of maximizing productivity against the long-term cost. But if you don’t care for that element of randomness in your 4X strategy, disasters can be turned off (or cranked up) using a slider on the game configuration screen. I love having disasters in play, because not only do they add to gameplay variety but they bring an important element of the real world to Civ VI that’s been conspicuously missing all this time. On top of that, mid-game technologies allow you to mitigate floods with dams, giving you fertility benefits with none of the damaging drawbacks. And even when disasters do strike and leave a swath of your land’s improvements in ruins, the residual effect is increased fertility, which can help you recover quickly even if some of your population is wiped out. Floods and volcanic eruptions only take place on riverbanks and next to giant volcanos, obviously, so you know what you’re getting into when you build a city there. At the same time, they’re significant enough events that areas of the map that would’ve been previously effectively locked down and on autopilot can now spontaneously become problems that require thinking about solutions for again. These are a great, never-before-seen (unless you count Civ IV’s random events) addition that, with the exception of generally less-destructive storms and droughts, are telegraphed clearly enough that they rarely feel like they’re coming out of left field to go full Pompeii on you. “Gathering Storm’s titular feature, though, is its natural disasters. It was a refreshingly distinctive set of priorities. However, they get major production bonuses to unimproved forests and rainforests, and to fishing boats, which can make their developed territory look very different from any other civilization’s. The Maori are also incapable of permanently harvesting resources and can’t recruit great writers, which are significant limitations. Mansa Musa of Mali is up a similar creek if he has no desert tiles in cities from which to send his traders for extra gold, and Pachacuti of the Inca without mountain tiles to mine for production is like a fish out of water. For my first full game, I played (on King difficulty) as Kupe of the Maori, who starts on the ocean with sailing technology unlocked – which is great except that you have to spend a few turns looking for dry land, which can set you behind the pack. A couple are probably a little too specialized to be practical unless you’re playing a very specific scenario: Canada’s Wilfrid Laurier, for instance, is great if you happen to start at the north or south of the map, but his ability to build farms on tundra means he’s out of his element in the tropics. Most of the new civs and leaders are more than versatile and appealing: Suleiman of the Ottomans gets a unique governor, Matthias Corvinus of Hungary can turn city-states’ armies into powerful weapons, Dido of the Phoenicians can move her capital city almost at will, and Kristina of the Swedes automatically themes her Great Works.
